这两者的区分是高难度的区分，务必要用心体会。总的来说，两者虽字面上都有启迪之义，但是他们有本质区别。Enlighten有解惑、引向正途的意味，inspire则可以看成是”触发”、“催化”、“致使”，至于所导向的结果或行动则好坏未定。先说本质区别：enlighten更多偏向instruct这边的意思，偏向“传递知识”、“解释状况”、"引上正途“这种“解惑”式的意味，因为这词根的意思就是“亮灯”，在刚开始是用来指也就是驱逐了无知的黑暗嘛。例子如：enlighten us about the problem 给我们阐明了这题的道理enlighten him to overcome the difficulty。注意这里你被enlightened之后得到的往往是关于某一已经存在的事物的知识和感悟相反inspire如果要用为启发、启迪的时候，更多偏向于”给予灵感“，是从某人、某物得到了启发去创造探索一个新事物，例如：This trip to China inspires his collections of prose later。这趟中国之旅正是他之后散文集的灵感源头。从这里引申出去，inspire的义项变得更广，不但可以是受到启发，也可以是受到鼓舞、激励而去做一件事，或仅仅是被一种情绪感染，都是在可以表达的范围内，例如：His passion for romantic literature inspired him to begin writing. 他对浪漫主义文学的激情激励他开始写作。(注意与上面那个例句比较，上面是inspire+物，加被创造的东西；这里则是inspire+一个行动）揣摩下“enlighten him to..."和“inspire him to“的微妙不同，enlighten是引导，指导，启迪，而且似乎有人为后面的那个行动是对的，是正道，有价值判断；而inspire仅仅是说激励，鼓舞，并没有对后面的行动作出价值判断。前面提到inspire还可以表示使人感到，使人被某种情感感染。例子：Seeing the photo of his mom inspired him with nostalgia. 看到妈妈的照片，他心中泛起一阵对过去的怀恋。这样看来，inspire义项更多，而且实际生活中也更为常用。
