Located off China's S coast in the China Sea, it comprises the island of Hong Kong and adjacent islets, the Kowloon Peninsula, and the New Territories, all of which were leased by the British from China for 99 years (1898-1997). The entire territory was returned to China in 1997. It covers 398 sq mi (1,031 sq km); the New Territories, lying north of the Kowloon Peninsula, and constituting an enclave in China's Guangdong province, are more than 90% of the total area. The administrative center of Victoria on Hong Kong island's NW coast is also the center of economic activities. Hong Kong has an excellent natural harbor and is one of the world's major trade and financial centers. It has many educational institutions, incl. the Univ. of Hong Kong (1911).

HONGKONG，简写HK，香港最早是贩运香料的港湾 所以叫“香港”这个名字，再由广东白话的音译成英文，但实际上广东白话里面“香港”的发音和英语的并不一致，但是英国人（香港以前是英殖民地）没法正确的把白话的发音拼准确，所以就成了HONGKONG。

自从1997年回归后，香港的全称是：Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China （中华人民共和国香港特别行政区），简称HK SAR。而Hong Kong是一般最常用的英文名称。
