(你喜欢我的公司吗?) B先生: I don't know. What company do you work for? (我不知道。你给哪家公司做事?)，你可能觉得这没什么，无非是B先生一时走神，没太在意A先生的前后话语。同样的对话也可能发生在两个刚见面不久的兵士之间: 兵士A: Do you like my company? (你喜欢我的连队吗?) 兵士B: I don't know. What company do you work for? (我不知道。你在哪个连队?)在这极其普通的对话里，即便那位B人士不够专心，损失也不是太大。但在其中我们学到了company一词有两义: 一是"公司"、二是"连队"。如我们改换一下场合，在同样的对话中，这位心不在焉者或要付出惨重代价。如果B先生来自中国结交了来自美国的A女士，两人生出异国恋情。但B先生对英文的homonyms钻研不够。二人独处时，风情万种的A女士对B先生来上秋波迭送的一句: "Do you like my company?" 如果这时B先生依旧答: "I don't know. What company do you work for?"，那这段异国恋也就该到头了。因为A女士的问话是: "你喜欢我陪伴你吗?" 笨驴B的回答"你在哪家公司上班"一定把A送进了另一种"云里雾里"。
