As an adjective, square describes someone who is honest and straightforward. However, after World War 2, it has been used to describe someone who doesn’t like or pretends to understand jazz. Later, the meaning of square extends to say a person who is ordinary or conservative in behavior or demeanor, not 'cool'. Be there or be square 《不见不散》，电影英文名square 在俚语中有“无趣的”“呆板的”意思。 Be there or be square 就是“如果不赴约就是无趣的人”，比较合乎国语习惯的说法就是“不见不散”了。
