Directions: I thank you ahead of time for taking part in my youth culture project. Your thoughtful answers to the following questions will be most helpful as I teach my high school students about different cultures and ways of thinking.Youth Culture Survey Gender: F Age: 19 Location: AustraliaWhat factors have had the greatest influence on your life, in some way shaping who you are? Definitely my family, especially my mother. I picked up many traits from her, and watching her work to care for me and my siblings has drove me to want to become successful in the future.Where do you feel most relaxed? What makes this place so comfortable and relaxing? At home, in front of my computer. It’s my refuge from the real world. I can be myself because no one’s looking.Do you expect to marry? If so, how old do you want to be when you marry? What are three qualities or characteristics or qualities you would look for in a spouse? I don’t expect to marry, but I suppose if I did it would be in the early thirties.I would look for trustworthiness, intelligence and respect for personal space in a spouse. A person lacking any of these three characteristics would not be someone I would want to marry.Describe what you expect to be doing in ten years? Where do you expect to live? I’m studying law now, so I see myself as a lawyer in ten years. I don’t have specific expectations, but I would hope to live in an upper middle-class townhouse or apartment, in the city. How far can you live from your family and be comfortable? I’m currently several countries apart from my family and am quite comfortable, but I still need regular contact with them through phone and the internet. What is your religion? How do you practice it? If you do not practice a religion formally, please explain describe your belief system and how it influences your life. I’m technically a Buddhist, but my religious practice incorporates elements of Taoism. It doesn’t have an extremely large influence on my daily life as I don’t actively practise, but the religion has played a large role in shaping my personal moral code and beliefs of what is right and wrong.Name and describe three people that you most admire or want to be like? I can’t think of any off the top of my head at the moment. Rather than aspiring to be like certain people, I form an ideal of the perfect person in my mind instead and aspire towards that. Please list the five most important objects that you own? Explain why they are important to you. My computer. I spend about 18 hours on it a day. Everything I have is on my computer—my entertainment, my projects, and most importantly, it’s the medium of connection to my family overseas. My Ipod. It has music. I can’t imagine living without music.Frankly, I can’t think of anything else, unless I’m going to have to include the bare necessities of life such as clothes and a place to sleep.Oh, and money. Can’t live without money. How do you contribute to your community? In what ways do you help your parents, your school, your neighbors, your city and your country? Sad to say, I’m a tad too lazy and selfish to contribute much to any community. I do try to be a good daughter though. What is your favorite way to spend free time? What kinds of books, movies, music, games, sports, or other activities do you find most appealing? I waste all my time on my computer browsing the web. Recently I’ve turned into a fangirl again—specifically, a fan of Korean pop idols. Not good, I know, but now my life revolves around one Kim Heechul. In my defence, I don't let it affect my academic performance.I love reading fiction and will read anything if it’s well-written.My taste in music is diverse, and I listen to rock, hip-hop, pop and oldies. What is the most important current event issue that concerns you and why? The debate about gay marriage (in Australia) comes to mind. Homosexuality is an issue which I feel very strongly about—I believe that everyone has the right to live their life however they want, and that gay people have as much right to marriage as heterosexuals do.What comes to mind when you think of the following places:United StatesTechnologically-advanced, rich, resourceful.Something about satellites that I try not to think about.TaiwanSome sensitive political issues between this place and China that I’ll refrain from mentioning since this I’m posting this on a Chinese website. I do have very strong views about the situation that China probably wouldn’t like, though.JapanOne of the most advanced Asian countries.Anime and manga.Korea(I’ll assume this means South Korea)Also one of the most advanced Asian countries.Very, very, very attractive Korean pop idols.Apparently it has high speed internet in every school? I’m so jealous.EuropePlaces with a lot of historic significance.IndiaNo particular view.AfricaStarving children, poverty and AIDS… I’m sorry for the stereotype.
