Old buildings were cleared away and trees and grass were planted around the well-known Longmen Grottos. These beautiful grottoes on the hillsides along the Yi River are considered to be one of the three greatest stone treasures in China. (The other two are the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, Gansu Province and the Yungang Grottoes in Shanxi Province.)
