动画的英文有：animation、cartoon、animatedcartoon、cameracature。其中，比较正式的“Animation”一词源自于拉丁文字根的anima，意思为灵魂；动词animate是赋予生命，引申为使某物活起来的意思。所以animation可以解释为经由创作者的安排，使原本不具生命的东西像获得生命一般地活动，直接翻译为动画。cartoon可以翻译为美术片、动画片、讽刺画、漫画，不过多用来形容美国那种偏儿童的动画形式，中国制作的几乎全部可以归为卡通而算不上animation卡通和animation不可混为一谈还有一个特殊的：日本动画被称为“ANIME”。在日语中，“ANIME”的本意泛指“动画”，但是现在则专指“日本动画”，并成为世界范围内通用的专有名词（英语通用）。我看过一本书，好像是叫《动画发展史》，里面分类什么的说的很详细，无奈没有找到
