城市历史
首尔位于韩国西北部的汉江流域，最早为传疑时代的真番，辰国等后被统称为三韩部落的栖居地。
首尔从朝鲜三国时期的百济国都慰礼城始建，就开始了它在朝鲜半岛上作为首都或重要城市的地位，此后，今日的首尔一直都是高句丽、百济和新罗三家必争之地。
1392年，朝鲜太祖李成桂在开京（今开城）建立朝鲜王朝，1394年迁都汉阳并将汉阳改为汉城。
1945年8月朝鲜半岛解放后不久即实行美苏分据，初期仍名为京城府。
1946年8月15日，美军政厅公布法令第106号，将京城府从京畿道分离，更名为“서울”（拉丁字母转写为“Seoul”）。由于该名称没有对应的汉字，中文使用者沿用了李朝时期的汉字名“汉城”。
1960年代至1997年，韩国经济高速增长，汉城也从战争后的废墟迅速恢复发展成为现代都市，并创造了汉江奇迹。
1986年，汉城成功举办亚洲运动会。
1988年，汉城成功举行奥林匹克运动会，2002年作为第一东道国的首都，汉城承办了2002年世界杯足球赛的开幕式。
2003年12月，韩国国会通过《新行政首都特别法》，决定将韩国行政首都从汉城迁往韩国中部地区，即后来的世宗市。
2004年10月，迁都计划被韩国宪法法院裁定违宪，韩国政府遂改以搬迁部分行政机构的形式设定世宗市的行政中心城市地位，汉城得以维持首都的地位。
2005年1月19日，时任市长李明博宣布汉城的中文名称正式更改为“首尔”，并正式向中国方面要求协助改名，曾一度引发中国大陆内部的舆论讨论。
2010年，韩国政府放弃从2003年以来迁都世宗市的计划，首尔仍继续维持首都地位。
2012年7月1日，世宗市正式启用为行政中心城市后，韩国青瓦台、韩国国会、大法院等重要国家机关仍然驻于首尔，而其他36个政府机构则于2012年9月至2014年年底期间陆续迁往世宗，陆续分担首尔市的行政首都职能。
