1. 既然表示“事实”，就无所谓真假，所以不要说true fact(真实的事实)或false fact(虚假的事实)。

2. 汉语中说“事实是……”，说成英语通常是The fact is that…。如：

She didn’t answer my letter. The fact is that she didn’t even read it. 她没有回我的信，事实是她连看都没有看过。

但该结构在口语中可以有多种变体。如：

The fact is, he has not enough money. 事实是，他没有足够的钱。

Fact is that they are angry with each other. 事实是他们生彼此的气。

Fact is, she doesn’t like him. 事实是她不喜欢他。

有时fact前还可以有修饰语。如：

The simple fact is, he’s not very good at his job. 简单的事实是，他的工作做得不是很好。

The plain fact is people still buy books. 清楚的'事实是，人们还是会买书。

3. 注意the fact that的3个重要用法：

(1) 按英语习惯，除极个别的介词(如except, but等)外，一般的介词之后原则上不能直接跟that从句作宾语。如要接，则需借助the fact that这一结构。如：

I didn’t go out because of the fact that it was raining. 因为在下雨，所以我没出去。

The judge paid a lot of attention to the fact that the child was unhappy at home. 法官非常注意这一情况，即孩子在家里并不快乐。

(2) 为了避免直接用从句放在句首作主语(因为这样显得头重脚轻且太正式)，常用the fact that…结构作主语。如：

The fact that she was foreign made it difficult for her to get a job. 她是外国人，这就使她找工作很困难。

The fact that you haven’t got these qualifications doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t be able to enter the university. 不具备这些学历一事，并不必然意味着你就不能进大学。

(3) 英语中有的动词虽为及物动词，可接名词或代词作宾语，但通常不接that从句作宾语。若语义上需要接一个that从句，则可借助the fact that结构。如：

I dislike the fact that he smokes. 我厌恶他吸烟。

No one can deny the fact that fire burns. 无人能否认火能燃烧的事实。

You can’t escape the fact that she has got married three times. 她结过3次婚，这个事实你是不能逃避的。

I admired the fact that he would talk to students outside the classroom or talk with them on the telephone. 我羡慕他经常在课外与学生聊天或通过电话与学生聊天。

4. 用于 in fact, as a matter of fact, 意为“事实上”“实际上”。如：

As a matter of fact, I didn’t have anything. 事实上，我什么也没有。

He doesn’t mind. In fact, he’s very pleased. 他对此并不介意，实际上他还很高兴。
