一、电影院的规模按观众厅的容量可分为：
（1）特大型1801座以上或11个厅以上；
（2）大型1201座～1800座或8~10个厅；
（3）中型701座～1200座或5~7个厅；

观众厅是电影院的主要组成部分，银幕是观众厅设计的依据，银幕尺寸的大小决定观众的容量，银幕越大容纳观众的人数越多，观众少的观众厅其银幕则相对缩小，所以观众厅的尺度实际上取决于银幕的大小。
银幕的形状又决定观众厅的体型，新形式电影尤是如此。不同的品种有不同形状的银幕，大视野电影的银幕尺寸决定了观众厅的高度比例，环幕电影的银幕决定观众厅必须是圆形，而穹幕电影的银幕需要一个穹顶的观众厅等等。一般平面银幕的电影院观众厅呈矩形或梯形，地面有一定坡度。
影院的声音是从影片的声带上还原出来的，故不必依靠观众厅的声学条件来改变原来的音调，而只要求符合混合录音棚的声学频率响应特性，以如实还原影片声带上的声音。
