早期的基督教派把罗马帝国在12月25日纪念太阳神的日子作为圣诞节来庆祝。
12月下旬是北半球的冬至前后，白昼时间是最短的，且是农闲期，又是新一年的春天之前。所以大家就顺理成章地用这天来庆祝日。
直到公元350年左右，12月25日这天的庆祝圣诞节的习俗才开始慢慢流传出来。
胖胖的圣诞老公公深入人心，可这个可爱的人物形象却是童话故事里的人物造型。他的原型其实是生活在公元4世纪的小亚细亚(现土耳其)，一名乐善好施的教主圣.尼古拉斯（St.Nikolaus） 他平日里经常救济穷人，给小朋友送些小礼物。深得人心，受人爱戴。他离世后，后人为了纪念他称为圣人,他的故事也流传到四方。
