九月初是1号到9号。
9月是公历年中的第九个月，是小月，一共有30天。农历九月叫狗月，九月的别称有菊月、授衣月、青女月、小田月、长月、暮秋、晚秋、残秋、素秋、秋白、玄月、霜序、季商、戌月、季秋、凉秋、暮商等。
按照罗马旧历，March为第一个月，September就是第七个月。September这一名称源自意为“七”的拉丁文septem。当罗马人采用了儒略历（The Julian Calendar）之后，他们保留了原先的好几个月名，September就成了“九月”。
9世纪初，西欧封建帝国查理曼帝国的皇帝查理曼（Charlemagne）拒绝接受该罗马名称，把九月称为“收获月”，英文仿此叫法。因此长期以来九月在英文里一直称为‘harvest-month’，意即“收获月”。
