“革命”一词最早出自我国古书《易经》“汤武革命，顺乎天而应乎人”一语，意思是商汤和周武王的改朝换代，顺乎天理，合乎人情。“革”是变革的意思；“命”指天命。古代帝王自称是受天命来统治老百姓的，所以推翻一个旧朝代，建立一个新朝代，就称为“革命”。秦代以后，尽管朝代更迭，但“革命”这个词并未长期流行，历代仁人志士们只是把自己的正义之举称为“光复”、“复兴”、“举义”“起义”等。根据湖南陈蒯良先生主编的《国魂》一书考证，近代“革命”一词的运用，最早是在孙中山领导的民主主义革命时期。1895年9月孙中山创立的革命团体兴中会，在广州运送军械，不慎走漏风声。10月，孙中山、陈少白、郑弼臣3人被迫经香港东渡日本。11月初，船抵日本神户，他们上岸买了一份日文报纸，上面赫然刊登了一则新闻《支那革命党首领孙逸仙抵日》。孙中山看后觉得“革命党”这个称呼很好，对他的同志说，我们党以后就称“革命党”吧，从此以后，中国的革命志士便把自己的行动称作“革命”。以后“革命”一词，成了一个极其深刻的政治术语，人们广泛运用至今，把一些根本性的改革也称为“革命”，如思想革命，产业革命，技术革命，文化革命等等。
