The Aegean Sea (Greek--Aigaion Pelagos) is an arm of the Mediterranean Sea between Greece and Asia Minor. The name is variously explained in writings of antiquity as derived from Aegeus, king of Athens and father of Theseus, or from Aegea, a queen of the Amazons who drowned in the sea, or from an ancient Greek town named Aegae. The Aegean Sea is about 644km (400mi) long and about 290km (180mi) wide. It is connected with the Sea of Marmara in the northeast by the Strait of the Dardanelles. The Aegean Sea is irregular in outline with numerous gulfs, and is studded with islands, including the Sporades, Cyclades, and Dodecanisa. It was the center of one of the earliest known European civilizations. The Aegean Sea winds usually appear during the warm season from May to September, blow to the north and are called etisies or meltemia. The meltemia season begins around the end of May and ends around the end of October. They are the strongest during the months of July and August, and their average duration is from 2 to 4 days, although they do not have the same frequency of appearance every year. These winds mostly blow during the day, from 8 in the morning to 8 in the evening, and are at their strongest. The Aegean Sea is located between the Greek peninsula on the west, and Turkey to the east. It is actually a northern arm of The Mediterranean Sea, with Crete forming a geographical division. It is connected to the Black Sea to the north through the Dardanelles, the Sea of Marmara and the Bosporus.

Aegean Sea IslandsThe Aegean Sea is home to a few islands that include Crete and Rhodes. Interestingly, Aegean Sea was originally known as the Archipelago, and while the term is still used, the Aegean Sea is generally referred to as the Aegean Sea today, though the origin of the name Aegean Sea is questioned and claimed by many.Aegean Sea Origin of the NameThe Aegean Sea is a sea that has many explanations where its name is concerned. Many have said that the Aegean Sea was named after the Greek town of the Aegae, while others have said that the Aegean Sea was named after the queen of the Amazons, and others still claim that the Aegean Sea was given its name after the Aigaion, which was a sea goat. Of course, there is also the theory that the Aegean Sea was named after Aegeus, who was the father of Theseus, who drown himself in the Aegean Sea when he was told that his son had died. Most today give more credit to the Aegean Sea being named after the Greek word aiges, which means waves. The Bulgarians also take credit with naming the Aegean Sea as it translates into "white sea" and legend has it that the Bulgarians found the Aegean Sea a great way to travel when compared with the Black Sea.Aegean Sea SizeThe Aegean Sea has a maximum depth of 11,624 feet and covers more than 214,000 kilometers in area. The Aegean Sea has many different islands, which are actually just continued mountains on the mainland. For this reason, navigating around the Aegean Sea, especially around the islands in the Aegean Sea can be quite difficult. While some of the islands in the Aegean Sea have safe harbors or bays, many the Aegean Sea islands are difficult to get to because the waters can be shallow near shore, there are rocks and volcanic materials, and many of these things cannot be seen through the Aegean Sea waters.Aegean Sea 1400 IslandsThe Aegean Sea actually has 1,415 islands with 1,395 of them belonging to Greece and two belonging to Turkey. The islands located in the Aegean Sea has been an area of tension between Turkey and Greece, with both of them wanting to lay claim to the water as well as the islands in the Aegean Sea. The conflicts over the Aegean Sea and the Aegean Sea islands is something that has been ongoing since the 1970s, resulting in continued strained relations.Aegean Sea LocationThe Aegean Sea has been surrounded by conflict because of both the Aegean Sea waters, the Aegean Sea islands, ownership of the Aegean Sea, and even its name. While this is the case, the Aegean Sea continues to be a simple way for people to trade, travel, and enjoy the waters of the Aegean Sea. Despite conflicts and legends about the Aegean Sea both the people of Turkey and Greece and those that live in the Aegean Sea civilizations continue to use and enjoy the water and the Aegean Sea islands to the fullest extent possible. The Aegean Sea is known for cool waters, calm waters and many fishermen claim that the Aegean Sea is one of the most enjoyable seas to travel through.参考资料:
