Choosing an Occupation

One of the most important problems a young person faces is deciding what to do. There are some people, of course, who from the time they are six years old “know” that they want to be doctors or pilots or fire fighters, but the majority of us do not get around to making a decision about an occupation or career until somebody or something forces us to face the problem.

Choosing an occupation takes time, and there are a lot of things you have to think about as you try to decide what you would like to do. You may find that you will have to take special courses to qualify for a particular kind of work, or you may find out that you will need to get actual work experience to gain enough knowledge to qualify for a particular job.

Fortunately, there are a lot of people you can turn to for advice and help in making your decision. At most schools, there are teachers who are professionally qualified to give you detailed information about job qualifications. And you can talk over your ideas with family members and friends who are always ready to listen and to offer suggestions.

On the Choice of Career

In recent years, there is no consensus of opinions among college students about choice of career. Some students are in favor of the view that when choosing a job, interest plays the key part and should be thought about firstly; while others take a completely different side, firmly believing that prosperity is more worthwhile.

People holding the first view think that interest will result in more happiness and satisfaction at work, with which they could work in a more relaxing way and make progress more easily. Otherwise, they will suffer from depression due to lack of interest. However, holders of the second view argue that one should pay more attention to the career prosperity while making a choice, which will surely lead to prosperity of a person himself sooner or later. Therefore, they believe that it is career prosperity that counts most.

Personally, I deem that prosperity is the right element to think about because career prosperity can bring about one's success both in career and in life. In this sense, only career prosperity can bring a person happiness and satisfaction in the long run.

Another reason is thatthere is a big gap between the majors some students study in school and the demands of vacant jobs. So companies think some students are not fit for the jobs.

Solution to the problem requiresefforts on both the society and the students. The companies should value the students, talent and knowledge while the latter should not merely aim at material gains. They should be down-to–earth in building up their career. Furthermore, they should face their weak points so as to improve themselves and be more competent.

There are two reasons that account for this strange phenomenon. One is that some college students cannot come to terms with themselves and with the world around them. They pursue too high goals and are too particular about such factors as working conditions, salary, and so on. Therefore, they are reluctant to accept the job when they are offered to them. Another reason is that the majors some students pursue do not match with the demands of the job market. As a result, they canonly sit and miss opportunities.

To solve this problem, I think college students should know their own strengths and weaknesses and have the right attitude towards themselves and the job vacancies. In addition, they should not attach too much importance to material aspects of the job. They should put priority to their future development and their contributions to society in stead. Furthermore, they should think of receiving some further training to meet the demands of society.

With the development of our society,our women 's ability are also enhancing. Some women even can do some jobs which men couldn't do well. It' not easy to solve the gender discrimination.It needs our government's help, our government should do some propaganda about gender eq equal and make some rules for the companies.

In this case, for young graduates, there are fewer chances to get access to the jobs taken up by the older and more experienced.

What Jobs Do College Graduates Want to Take? It goes without saying that college students have a clear idea about their future occupation. Boys are to some extent different from girls in their choices as is seen from the table. According to the table, the most striking contrast is in the occupation of teaching: 45% of girl students would like to become teachers after graduation whereas only 5% of boys would. What boys like to do most is to become managers (40%) and the second largest group is to be businessmen (30%). Girls also like to pursue these two professions, with a percentage of 15% and 25% respectively choosing these two jobs. 15% of boys want to become lawyers while 10% of girls prefer this profession. It can be easily proved that teaching is preferred by females as it provides a more steady life. Women’s patience also fits the job well. Boys consider working as managers, businessmen and lawyers more demanding and exciting. It is true that more boys want to show their talents in these fields. One thing noteworthy is that the number of girls who want to do business is not small. This shows that girls want to take challenging and exciting jobs, too. Nevertheless, no matter what job you choose, it could be a challenge. As for me, I like science and technology. With the economic growth and social progress, professionals of science and technology will become more and more important. Therefore I will choose doing scientific research as my career.
