有些表示时间的名词可以直接用作状语，如 this month, nextweek, all the year, a whole day 等。

主动语态中称作宾语补足语，变成被动语态后宾语补足语就变成了主语补足语，主语补足语也称作保留宾语。只有部分感知动词（如 see, hear, find 等）和使役动词（let, make, have, get 等）才能带有不定式补足语。如：
本句中的 his ambition 是主语，句中没有上述词类，因此不可能有补足语。不定式作定语与被修饰词之间有动宾关系、主谓关系或动状关系。his ambition (to become an astronaut) 就是动状关系，如果将其改为定语从句his ambition (with which he wants to become an astronaut)，就可以看出这种关系。

whether they are gases, liquid or solid 是插入性让步状语从句，整句的意思是“无论它们是气体、液体还是固体，所有的物质都是有原子构成的”
只有分词短语才能作状语，be they gases 不是分词结构，不可能还原成whether从句。

只能用 D. stopped 才符合上下句的关系，即“他在笑，他止住了哭”。如果用 A. was 就说不通了，意思是“他又笑又哭”，自相矛盾。如果不填（C）或用D. never 第二分句句子中缺少动词，句子不完整。
5,平庸的人为什么不是moderate people 而一定是average people? 因为moderate 除了温和还有平庸的意思啊？
二者都可以表示平庸的人，但是需要看上下文关系。指 moderate “稳健的”或“不激进的”，强调在性格上普普通通的。average 指“处于一般水平的”，强调在能力方面没有突出的特点。
