一、含义不同
1、mandarin 作名词时，意思是普通话、旧时中国政府的高级官员；作形容词时，意为官僚的、中国式服装的、过分文雅的。
2、Chinese 作名词时，意思是中文、汉语、华人、中国人；作形容词时，意为中国的、中文的、中国人的、中国话的。
二、来源不同
1、Mandarin 这个词第一次是出现在明朝的《利玛窦中国札记》这本书中，意思是“官僚”，来源于葡萄牙人。而葡萄牙人又是借用了马来西亚语menteri这个词，意思是部长。
以前葡萄牙人见到中国政府高官时都用Menteri一词来代指中国的“大官”。但是由于葡萄牙人对这个词的发音掌握不准，所有他们就在后面加了一个n，也就是Menterin，发音就是Mandarin。
2、Chinese 的格式是源自古英语的构词法。China在英文中最初的拼写是Cin、Chin，来源于拉丁文的Sina，属于弱变格需要加-ese变为生格。词根-ese来源自拉丁语的-ense（中性），加在地名后面表示某个地区有的东西，所以-ese结尾的词语对于人来说是不太尊重的称谓来源于此。
三、用法不同
1、mandarin作普通话之意时，仅用于指以北京语音为标准音，以北方话（官话）为基础方言，以典范的现代白话文著作为语法规范的现代标准汉语。
2、Chinese指的是所有的中国国内的语言，包括各种方言都可以说是Chinese。
