本能 （Instinct） 【定义】：为一种来自生体的内在兴奋(somatic source of excitation)之先天的心理表徵(psychological representation) (p39)。该心理表徵叫做期望(wish)而由它所发出的生体之兴奋状态称之为需求(need)。如饥饿的状态来自身体组织缺乏养份，表现在心理上即成为一种对食物的期望。本能被视为人格的驱动因素，它不只驱动了行为的发生，也导引了行为的可能方向。换句话说本能藉由增加对特定刺激的敏感度撰择性的控制了行为的方向。 是某一动物种各成员都具有的典型的、刻板的、受到一组特殊刺激便会按一种固定模式行动的行为模式。它是由遗传固定下来的，是在个体发育过程中随着成熟和适当的刺激经验而逐一出现的。像鸟筑巢、蜂酿蜜、鸡孵蛋等觅食、自卫和生殖行动，都是特定物种所具有的先天的本能行为。“本能”以及用作同义语的“先天行为”都没有一个被广泛接受的明确的定义。由于本能概念的含混性，也因为科学哲学的变化，某些科学家拒绝直接使用这一概念，而另一些科学家则坚持认为本能具有明显的作用。实际上，对本能概念的理解受到了哲学、心理学、生态学等不同科学研究观点和方法的影响。并且，随着科学的发展，对于本能的理解或多或少有一些变化。
