一、This is IN THE NEWS in VOA Special English. On Friday, Republican candidate John McCain announced his choice for vice president: Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. She is forty-four years old and largely unknown in national politics. She was elected governor two years ago. She will be the first woman on a Republican presidential ballot. The Democrats nominated Geraldine Ferraro for vice president in nineteen eighty-four. Governor Palin praised Geraldine Ferraro and Hillary Clinton for their historic campaigns. And she said her own candidacy means that women still have a chance for the White House. She appeared with John McCain in Ohio Friday, on the Arizona senator's seventy-second birthday. The Republican Party opens its nominating convention Monday in Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Minnesota. On Thursday night, in Denver, Colorado, Democrat Barack Obama accepted his party's nomination to be the forty-fourth president. BARACK OBAMA: "With profound gratitude and great humility, I accept your nomination for the presidency of the United States."The first-term senator from Illinois is the first black nominee of a major American political party. He is forty-seven, the Hawaiian-born son of a father from Kenya and a white mother from Kansas. He narrowly defeated Hillary Clinton in the primary season. She received eighteen million votes. The race against John McCain was very close heading into the conventions. In large part, this week's Democratic convention was aimed at uniting the party. Hillary and Bill Clinton gave speeches in support of Barack Obama. And she called on delegates during a roll call vote of the states to vote for him "with one voice." They suspended the voting and declared him the nominee. His running mate is Joe Biden, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The longtime Delaware senator ran for president twenty years ago and again this year. Barack Obama gave his acceptance speech before tens of thousands at an open-air sports stadium. He said America is at a defining moment, with the nation at war and the economy in great trouble. He said "the American promise" is threatened from eight years of what he called "the failed policies of George W. Bush." Barack Obama said he does not think Senator McCain knows what is going on in the lives of Americans. The Democrat promised to cut taxes for ninety-five percent of working families. And he promised a goal to end dependence on oil from the Middle East in ten years. He also said he would only send troops into harm's way with a clear mission.BARACK OBAMA: "I will end this war in Iraq responsibly and finish the fight against al-Qaida and the Taliban in Afghanistan. I will rebuild our military to meet future conflicts. But I will also renew the tough, direct diplomacy that can prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and curb Russian aggression."Barack Obama spoke on the anniversary of a major event in the American civil rights movement. Thursday was forty-five years since Martin Luther King Junior's "I Have a Dream" speech in Washington. And that's IN THE NEWS in VOA Special English, written by Brianna Blake. I'm Steve Ember二、ANNOUNCER:Welcome to People in America in VOA Special English. At the beginning of the twentieth century, American laborers often worked long hours for little pay. Many worked under extremely dangerous conditions. About five hundred thousand workers, however, had joined groups called labor unions, hoping to improve their situation. Today, Rich Kleinfeldt and Sarah Long tell about five labor leaders who worked to improve conditions for American workers. (MUSIC)VOICE ONE:In nineteen hundred, the largest national organization of labor unions was the American Federation of Labor. Its head was Samuel Gompers. Gompers had moved to New York with his parents when he was thirteen years old. He was twenty-four when he began working for the local union of cigar makers. He worked for the labor movement for sixty years.VOICE TWO:Samuel Gompers had helped create the A.F.L. in the late eighteen eighties. He led the organization for all but one year until his death in nineteen twenty-four. Gompers defined the purpose of the labor movement in America. He also established the method used to solve labor disputes.Gompers thought unions should work only to increase wages, improve work conditions and stop unfair treatment of workers. He called his method pure and simple unionism.Samuel Gompers sought immediate change for workers. He used group actions such as strikes as a way to try to force company owners to negotiate.VOICE ONE:Gompers was criticized for going to social events with industry leaders, and for compromising too easily with employers. But Gompers believed such actions helped his main goal. He believed if workers were respected, their employers would want to make working conditions better.Under the leadership of Samuel Gompers, the labor movement won its first small gains. For example, the federal government recognized the right of workers to organize. That happened when union representatives were part of the National War Labor Board during World War One.(MUSIC)VOICE TWO:John L. Lewis expanded the American labor movement with a campaign he called organizing the unorganized. Lewis was the head of the United Mine Workers of America. He also was the vice-president of the A.F.L. In nineteen thirty-five, Lewis formed the Committee for Industrial Organization within the A.F.L. He wanted the C.I.O. to organize workers in mass production industries, such as automobile industry. The A.F.L. mainly organized unions of workers who had the same skills. But Lewis believed skilled and unskilled workers in the same industry should be organized into the same union. Congress passed the National Labor Relations Act in nineteen thirty-five. It gave workers the legal right to join unions and to negotiate with employers. John L. Lewis thought it was the right time to press the large industries to recognize workers' rights. The A.F.L., however, decided not to support such action and expelled the unions that belonged to the C.I.O. In nineteen thirty-six, the C.I.O. began operating as another national labor organization. Lewis was its leader.VOICE ONE:John L. Lewis was an extremely colorful and effective speaker. He had worked as a coal miner and could relate to the most terrible conditions workers faced. More than three million workers joined the C.I.O. in its first year as a separate organization. For the first time, labor won many strikes and permanent improvements in workers conditions. For many years, presidents, members of Congress, and business leaders considered John L. Lewis the voice of labor. And, American workers saw Lewis as their hero. By the nineteen fifties, the labor movement an established part of American life.(MUSIC)VOICE TWO:Walter Reuther was the vice president of the C.I.O. under Lewis, and became its president in nineteen fifty-two. Reuther believed unions had a social responsibility. His ideas were partly influenced by his German father who was a socialist. Walter Reuther was trained to make tools to cut metal. He joined the United Automobile Workers union when it first formed in nineteen thirty-five. VOICE ONE:Walter Reuther was president of the United Auto Workers for twenty-three years beginning in nineteen forty-six. He shaped the U.A.W. into one of the most militant and forward-looking unions. He held strikes to gain increased wages for workers, but, at the same time, he expected workers to increase their rate of production. He was the first to link pay raises to productivity increases. Reuther also was greatly concerned about civil rights and the environment. In nineteen fifty-five, Reuther helped the A.F.L. and C.I.O. re-join as one organization. Reuther's ideas were recognized worldwide. But they also brought him enemies. He survived three murder attempts. He said: "You have to make up your mind whether you are willing to accept things as they are or whether you are willing to try to change them." (MUSIC)VOICE TWO:A. Philip Randolph is known for combining the labor and civil rights movements. Randolph became involved with unions in nineteen-twenty-five. A group of black workers on passenger trains asked him to organize a union, the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. Randolph was not a laborer. He was the college educated son of a minister. He published a socialist magazine in New York City. He was known as a fighter for black rights. Randolph strongly believed that economic conditions affected rights and power for African Americans. For twelve years, Randolph fought the Pullman Company that employed the passenger train workers. In nineteen thirty-five, Pullman finally agreed to negotiate with the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. Two years later, the porters' union signed the first labor agreement between a company and a black union. A. Philip Randolph led the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters for forty-three years. In nineteen fifty-seven he became vice president of the A.F.L.-C.I.O.Randolph used large group protests to change work conditions. He planned marches on the capital in Washington to protest the unequal treatment of black workers by the government. In nineteen sixty-three, Randolph planned the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. At this huge peaceful gathering, civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Junior made his famous "I have a dream" speech. Within a year the civil rights amendment passed guaranteeing equal rights for blacks and other minorities.(MUSIC)VOICE ONE:Cesar Chavez created the first farmers union in nineteen sixty-two. That union later became the United Farm Workers of America. Farm workers had been considered too difficult to organize. They worked during growing seasons. Many farm workers did not speak English or were in the country illegally. Farm workers earned only a few dollars each hour. They often lived in mud shelters and had no waste removal systems. Many farm workers were children.VOICE TWO:Cesar Chavez went to school for only eight years. But he read a lot. He was greatly influenced by the ideas of famous supporters of non-violence such as Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi. Chavez led his workers on marches for better pay and conditions. Workers walked hundreds of miles carrying cloth banners with the Spanish words "Viva la Causa" -- long live our cause.VOICE ONE:Cesar Chavez created a new strike method called a boycott. People refused to buy products of a company accused of treating farm workers badly. Chavez also publicized the dangers of some farm chemicals. Cesar Chavez improved the conditions of farm workers by making their mistreatment a national issue. VOICE TWO:Union membership has dropped sharply since its highpoint in the nineteen forties. Yet conditions for American workers continue to improve as employers realize that treating their workers well is good for business. The efforts of leaders of the American labor movement during the past one hundred years continue to improve the lives of millions of workers.(MUSIC)ANNOUNCER:This Special English program was written by Linda Burchill and produced by Paul Thompson. The announcers were Rich Kleinfeldt and Sarah Long. I'm Faith Lapidus. Join us again next week for another People In America program in VOA Special English.

The United States has made an urgent plea for an unprecedented global effort to fight the Ebola outbreak that's originated in West Africa. The Secretary of State John Kerry said the disease was a global crisis demanding a global response. Ali Mcbull reports from Washington.President Obama is now trying to reassure a nervous American public that fighting Ebola is, in his words, not just a public health issue, but a national security priority. But the death in Texas of 42-year-old Thomas Eric Duncan has for many raised questions about just how effectively health officials here can isolate the virus. A new screening regime including taking the temperature of visitors has been announced at five American airports that together receive over 90% of those arriving from the Ebola-affected countries of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia where Mr. Duncan arrived from in mid September.

The Independent Spirit——about“ Jane Eyer” This is a story about a special and unreserved woman who has been exposed to a hostile environment but continuously and fearlessly struggling for her ideal life. The story can be interpreted as a symbol of the independent spirit. It seems to me that many readers’ English reading experience starts with Jane Eyer. I am of no exception. As we refer to the movie “Jane Eyer”, it is not surprising to find some differences because of its being filmized and retold in a new way, but the spirit of the novel remains----to be an independent person, both physically and mentally. Jane Eyer was a born resister, whose parents went off when she was very young, and her aunt, the only relative she had, treated her as badly as a ragtag. Since Jane’s education in Lowwood Orphanage began, she didn’t get what she had been expecting——simply being regarded as a common person, just the same as any other girl around. The suffers from being humiliated and devastated teach Jane to be persevering and prize dignity over anything else.As a reward of revolting the ruthless oppression, Jane got a chance to be a tutor in Thornfield Garden. There she made the acquaintance of lovely Adele and that garden’s owner, Rochester, a man with warm heart despite a cold face outside. Jane expected to change the life from then on, but fate had decided otherwise: After Jane and Rochester fell in love with each other and got down to get marry, she unfortunately came to know in fact Rochester had got a legal wife, who seemed to be the shadow following Rochester and led to his moodiness all the time ----Rochester was also a despairing person in need of salvation. Jane did want to give him a hand, however, she made up her mind to leave, because she didn’t want to betray her own principles, because she was Jane Eyer. The film has finally got a symbolist end: Jane inherited a large number of legacies and finally returned. After finding Rochester’s misfortune brought by his original mad wife, Jane chose to stay with him forever. I don’t know what others feel, but frankly speaking, I would rather regard the section that Jane began her teaching job in Thornfield as the film’s end----especially when I heard Jane’s words “Never in my life have I been awaken so happily.” For one thing, this ideal and brand-new beginning of life was what Jane had been imagining for long as a suffering person; for another, this should be what the audiences with my views hoped her to get. But the professional judgment of producing films reminded me to wait for a totally different result: There must be something wrong coming with the excellence----perhaps not only should another section be added to enrich the story, but also we may see from the next transition of Jane’s life that “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you would get.” (By Forrest Gump’s mother, in the film “Forrest Gump”) What’s more, this film didn’t end when Jane left Thornfield. For Jane Eyer herself, there should always be somewhere to realize her great ideal of being independent considering her fortitude, but for Rochester, how he can get salvation? The film gives the answer tentatively: Jane eventually got back to Rochester. In fact, when Jane met Rochester for the first time, she scared his horse and made his heel strained, to a certain extent, which meant Rochester would get retrieval because of Jane. We can consider Rochester’s experiences as that of religion meaning. The fire by his frantic wife was the punishment for the cynicism early in his life. After it, Rochester got the mercy of the God and the love of the woman whom he loved. Here we can say: human nature and divinity get united perfectly in order to let such a story accord with the requirements of both two sides. The value of this film may be due to its efforts to explore a new way for the development of humanism under the faith of religion. Life is ceaselessly changing, but our living principles remain. Firmly persisting for the rights of being independent gives us enough confidence and courage, which is like the beacon over the capriccioso sea of life. In the world of the film, we have found the stories of ourselves, which makes us so concerned about the fate of the dramatis personae. In this era of rapid social and technological change leading to increasing life complexity and psychological displacement, both physical and mental effects on us call for a balance. We are likely to find ourselves bogged down in the Sargasso Sea of information overload and living unconsciousness. It’s our spirit that makes the life meaningful. 或另一篇:《简爱》英文读后感 Another interesting aspect of the novel is the character Bertha Mason. Bronte herself, alluding to the latest developments in Victorian psychiatric theory, attributed Bertha’s behavior to “moral madness” (qtd. in Showalter 73). Women were thought to be more susceptible to such disorders. Sexual appetite was considered one of the chief symptoms of moral insanity in women; it was subject to severe sanctions and was regarded as abnormal or pathological. According to Showalter, the periodicity of Bertha’s attack suggests a connection to the menstrual cycle, which many Victorian physicians understood as a system for the control of female sexuality. Rochester’s complicity in the destruction of his wife’s spirit is indicated in Jane’s recognition of the third story’s resemblance to a corridor in “Blubeard’s castle” (Bronte 138). In trying to persuade her to become his mistress, Rochester asks, “If you were mad, do you think I should hate you?” “I do indeed, sir,” Jane replies, and she is surely right (Bronte 328). Bertha’s death, “the purging of the lusts of the flesh,” must precede any successful union between Rochester and Jane. When they finally marry, they become equals, “not only because Rochester, in losing his hand and his sight, has leaned how it feels to be helpless and how to accept help, but also because Jane, in destroying the dark passion of her own psyche, has become truly her ‘own mistress’” (Showalter 75). As a conclusion, Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre is unambiguously one of the most well written novels with profound themes. It has influenced generations of readers, appealing to both children and adults, women and men. 或A Fairy Tale ‘WE ARE EQUAL!’ When these three words came out of the plain-looking girl’s mouth, the whole world was shocked. We have good reason to be shocked——deprived of family happiness from an early age, with neither beauty nor wealth to speak of, Jane Eyre seems to be never destined to become the heroine shining in the spotlight we often read about in romances——but is there really such a thing called destiny? At least Jane doesn’t think so. She is not pretty; she is not rich; she is a mere ordinary governess, so what? As an individual human existence, she has dignity as well as anyone else, so she deserves the chance to love and to be loved as well as anyone else! Despite her short, delicate body, her soul is not the least weaker than others’——even greater than most of them. The moment she said the three powerful words to Mr. Rochester proudly and steadily, her pale face must have been sparkling with sacredness, which would have made her the most beautiful woman ever, because the beauty of independence is eternal. With this spirit of independence she not only gained herself love, respect and happiness but also proved to the world that nobody is second class——unless you believe yourself to be. Hundreds of thousands of ordinary girls that usually get neglected in life——me included——love and admire Jane deeply because she inspires and encourages us to strive for our life goals against all odds bravely. She is a role model, an idol in our hearts but at the same time a friend, a big sister next door who’s not at all cold and distant, always ready and willing to stand by our side whenever we are in trouble. Every time when I feel inferior, puzzled and lose faith in myself and the strength to carry on the life path already chosen, Jane, my dear friend’s determined face and forceful words on that serene summer night would emerge inside my mind, which never failed to relight my fire of passion. Oh, how I long to be like her. But it’s not that I totally believe in her life story, by which I mean I don’t think the story of hers can happen to anybody. To me, it’s somewhat like a fairy tale that begins with ‘long long ago’ and ends with ‘ever after’, in which the prince and princess, though having suffered much in the process of getting together, would always end up in a harmonious marriage and enjoy all the best life has to offer. Being an obscure girl herself, the author Charlotte Bronte was so generous as to have provided our dear Jane a Mr. Rochester who loves her just the way she is, appreciates her unique character and a kindhearted family (later proved to be her relatives) that took her in when she was helpless and offered her a job to support herself. In reality, not every Jane Eyre can meet the proper people at the right time, just as not every ugly duckling can turn into a graceful swan——it may depend on a matter of luck. If you are too obsessed with fairy tales, you are very likely to feel disappointed and deceived by the not-so-perfect everyday life. But what are fairy tales for? We love to read them and we tend to believe in them even though we know they are not real. Sometimes we do need a little romantic daydream as seasonings in the routine of life, and we also need an ideal to believe in, a creed to live by, and a northern star to show us directions on the long journey. That’s maybe what Jane Eyre is for——it gives numerous common girls a possibility to look forward to, a life to reach for, and above all, a positive attitude to face all odds to encounter. Perhaps we can’t all have her luck, but we can have her independence, confidence, persistence, the courage of standing up to fight for ourselves against those seemingly taller than us, and the faith that we can finally win because WE ARE EQUAL.或 Mr Brocklehurst is a hypocrite who believes the girls at his school should be humble and not have any luxuries at all so their souls will be pure. Mr Brocklehurst is a hypocrite because he says the girls in his school should not have luxuries and be humble but in his house and family have a vast amount of luxuries and are not humble, so that makes him a hypocrite and does not practice what he preaches. The best example of Mr Brocklehurst being a hypocrite is when he tells off Julia Severn for having curly hair even though it curls naturally and says her hair will have to be cut off "Naturally! Yes, but we are not to conform to nature. I wish children to be the children of Grace: and why that abundance? I have again and again intimated that I desire the hair to be arranged closely, modestly, plainly. Miss Temple that Girls hair must be cut off entirely" but then Mr Brocklehurst's family (wife and two daughters) come in and they have lovely fur clothes and have curls in their hair and some are even fake curls, so this shows Mr Brocklehurst's hypocrisy at it's best. Mr Brocklehurst was very nasty to Jane. She accidentally broke a slate and was noticed by Mr Brocklehurst who brought her up to the front and told everyone she was a liar, due to what Mrs Reed told him about her and Mr Brocklehurst told everyone to exclude her from their conversations and ignore her and don't be friends with her. He made Jane look like an evil girl and humiliated her and ruined her fresh start at the school. Miss Temple told Jane not to be frightened and breaking the slate was an accident but she did not know what Mr Brocklehurst was going to say about her. awakening, he delights in Marion's attention, he feels a valued member of the family. The anxiety and inferiority he felt are dispelled by Marion's interest. After mass when he realises who Trimingham is and what status he holds, he begins, unwittingly to act as a go between - the main thrust of the novel. Trimingham asks Leo to run in ahead with a message for Marian. Meanwhile the doctor has declared Marcus infectious and Leo has been moved out of their shared bedroom. He now has a room to himself - Leo is now alone, as Jane is, in a strange environment. In the next chapters, Leo's role as a go between is compounded. Marion, Ted and Trimingham, all three central characters, ask him to take messages - he is happy and self important by his status and treatment by what he sees as his superiors - Marian and Trimingham. Leo cannot bring himself to be critical of Marion in that he blocks out reality and does not read anything into the situation. He looks only to please his elders and seems to be finding a father figure in Hugh - The character he comes to admire and trust the most during his stay. Leo is starting to mistrust his role but when the annual cricket match is announced and Marion suggests he extent his visit by a week, his initial happiness returns. The match quickly becomes a contest, not just of cricket but also over Marion. A player is injured and Leo finds himself acting as a substitute fielder, and as the match reaches crisis point with Trimingham bowling to Ted, Leo catches Ted out. Leo is in control of the game - he is once again important - as Jane is when she refuses Mr. Rochester.
