Zhihu is a question-and-answer website, like Quora, but its main audience is Chinese audiences. Most of the users are mainland Chinese, although some are in other parts of Asia, even in the United States.
Zhihu is one of the most exciting websites in China today. It's a community of people who share in common a love of knowledge. Questions on Zhihu cover a wide range of topics, from academics to politics, pop culture to sex. Some Zhihu users put great effort into writing entertaining, well-researched answers, and they have been rewarded by the Zhihu community with internet celebrity status ("Big V").
Compared to a lot of the Chinese internet, Zhihu is a civilized place. Zhihu users are well educated, polite, and open-minded. Although they may disagree with each other, they rarely resort to name-calling or obscenities.
Some of the content on Zhihu might surprise you if you are used to thinking that free speech in China doesn't exist. In fact, a lot of free speech happens in China every day, and Zhihu is an example of positive, socially-beneficial discourse at its best.
