BMW来自德语Bayerische Motoren Werke的首字母简称。
宝马公司在1916年3月7日成立，BMW的前身是一家飞机工厂，最初以制造流线型的双翼侦察机闻名于世，前身公司的名字叫BFW，公司创始人名吉斯坦-奥托(Gustan Otto)。1917年7月20日，BFW公司便开始重组，正式名为BMW。
1923年，BMW研制了第一台的摩托车发动机，1923年末，他们特约在慕尼黑(Munich)生产摩托车，而挂有BMW商标的R32摩托车则首次在市场中销售。BMW在1929年7月9日的晨报上作了整整一版的广告，宣布进军汽车制造业。BMW第一款系列化生产汽车的传奇就此诞生。
宝马（简称BMW）是德国汽车品牌，隶属于BMW集团。它拥有i、X、Z、纯数字4个车型，1、2、3等系列，以及在各系基础上进行改进的M系列（宝马官方的高性能改装部门）。
宝马车标的B.M.W.是巴伐利亚发动机制造厂的意思，标志的色彩和组合来自宝马所在地巴伐利亚州的州徽。
