第一句：先把句子的结构搞清楚，主语是continental slope，谓语是starts和reaches，基本意义是说“大陆坡从某地开始，延伸到某处”。中文翻译中的“延伸”，与之对应的是reaches，不是in the course of。in the course of a few hundred miles 对reaches 起到修饰作用。搞清了句子的结构，就会发现the true ocean明显不是插入语，the true ocean floor是reaches 的宾语，ocean floor是一体的，你把这两个词断开当然解释不清了。第二句：这里的reaches是名词，near its lower reaches是说“靠近它下部的延伸区域”（我一时想不出严谨的词来翻译这个reaches，就翻译成“延伸区域”了，意会一下吧）
