死海 Dead Sea 死海是地球上最低的水域，水面平均低于海平面约400米，位于以色列和约旦之间，是一个内陆盐湖。约旦河从其北部注入。死海长80公里，宽处为18公里，湖水表面面积1020平方公里，最深处400米。湖东的利桑半岛将该湖划分为两个大小深浅不同的湖盆，北面的面积占四分之三，深400米，南面平均深度不到3米。 死海是东非大裂谷的北部延续部分，这里是一块下沉的地壳，夹在两个平行的地质断层崖之间。死海位于沙漠中，降雨极少且不规则，冬无冰冻，夏季又非常炎热，造成湖水每年蒸发约1400毫米，常常是湖面上雾气腾腾。约旦河每年向死海注入5.4亿立方米水，另外还有4条不大但常年有水的河流从东面注入，由于夏季蒸发量大，冬季又有水注入，所以死海水位具有季节性变化，从30至60厘米不等。

The Dead Sea , also called the Salt Sea, is a salt lake bordering Jordan to the east, and Palestine and Israel to the west. Its surface and shores are 427 metres (1,401 ft) below sea level,[3] Earth's lowest elevation on land. The Dead Sea is 306 m (1,004 ft) deep, the deepest hypersaline lake in the world. With 34.2% salinity (in 2011), it is also one of the world's saltiest bodies of water, though Lake Vanda in Antarctica (35%), Lake Assal (Djibouti) (34.8%), Lagoon Garabogazköl in the Caspian Sea (up to 35%) and some hypersaline ponds and lakes of the McMurdo Dry Valleys in Antarctica (such as Don Juan Pond (44%)) have reported higher salinities. It is 9.6 times as salty as the ocean.[5] This salinity makes for a harsh environment in which animals cannot flourish, hence its name.
