《飞鸟集》是一部富于哲理的英文格言诗集，共收录诗325首，初版于1916年完成。其中一部分由诗人译自自己的孟加拉文格言诗集《碎玉集》（1899），另外一部分则是诗人1916年造访日本时的即兴英文诗作。诗人在日本居留三月有余，不断有淑女求其题写扇面或纪念册。考虑到这一背景，我们就不难理解这些诗何以大多只有一两行。诗人曾经盛赞日本俳句的简洁，他的《飞鸟集》显然受到了这种诗体的影响。因此，深刻的智慧和简短的篇幅为其鲜明特色。美籍华人学者周策纵先生认为，这些小诗“真像海滩上晶莹的鹅卵石，每一颗自有一个天地。它们是零碎的、短小的；但却也是丰富的、深刻的。”可谓言之有理。
