The raccoon , sometimes spelled racoon,also known as the common raccoon,North American raccoon,is a medium-sized mammal native to North America. The raccoon is the largest of the procyonid family, having a body length of 40 to 70 cm (16 to 28 in) and a body weight of 3.5 to 9 kg (8 to 20 lb). Its grayish coat mostly consists of dense underfur which insulates against cold weather. Two of the raccoon's most distinctive features are its extremely dexterous front paws and its facial mask, which are themes in the mythology of several Native American tribes. Raccoons are noted for their intelligence, with studies showing that they are able to remember the solution to tasks for up to three years.

raccoon是什么浣熊。浣熊在英语里叫raccoon，raccoon最初是美洲原著民族的语言，最初的意思是抓握、洗涤的意思。它们在日语被称为アライグマ，翻译过来就是洗熊或者浣熊。小浣熊的名称就来自于它爱洗手的行为，浣在中文中就有洗的意思。小浣熊虽然被叫做熊，长得却不像熊。它身躯和四肢细长，鼻子长长的，脸上有黑斑，身上的毛有很多颜色。

raccoon的生活习俗

浣熊是游泳健将，喜欢栖息在靠近河流、湖泊或池塘的树林中，它们大多成对或结成家族一起活动。浣熊白天大多在树上休息，晚上出来活动。 经常在树上活动，巢也筑在树上。白天它们在空心树和岩石或地面上的洞中睡觉，当受到黑熊追踪时，它就会逃到树梢躲起来。

浣熊是夜行性动物。晚上十二点后出门，加拿大人称之为神秘小偷。虽然是食肉目动物，但浣熊偏于杂食。春天和初夏的饮食主要由昆虫、蠕虫等。夏末、秋季及冬天，它更喜欢吃水果和坚果，如橡子、核桃。浣熊极少吃活跃或大的猎物，例如鸟和哺乳动物。
