Mandarin 的词源来自葡萄牙语 mandarium，是葡萄牙人吸纳梵文 mantrī 这个词而创出来的。这个词原本的意思是 counselor 策士，就是辅佐老大，给他出主意的那个人。1589年，葡语 mandarium 被英语正式吸纳，成为 mandarin，用来描述中国的官吏，也就是词典给的第一个意思。mandarin 是封建时代的官吏，那为什么又是 “普通话” 呢？话说中国地大物博，方言繁多，甚至每100公里就一个家乡话...！ 如果没有 lingua franca 通用语，根本没法办正经事！

1、英文的Mandrain源自葡萄牙语mandarim，意思是anofficial of the Chinese empire，即中华帝国的官员；也表示官话。而普通话，即标准华语、汉语。2、明朝《利玛窦中国札记》第一次出现“Mandarin”（拉丁语：Mandarinos）这个词， 代表“官僚”。3、Mandarin这个词源于马六甲苏丹国期间住在马六甲的葡萄牙人试图会见中国政府高官，并用马来语标记“朝臣、部长”意思的Menteri一词来代指中国的“大官”。但是由于葡萄牙人不谙马来语，把“Menteri”的音加了一个“n”，发成了“Mandarin”。
