小王子在新居旅游的时候说掌灯人是他唯一愿意结交的人。
第五颗星星非常奇怪，它是所有行星中最小的。它的空间有多小呢？小到只能容下一盏路灯和一个点灯的人。对于点灯人来说，路灯就是他的工作场所，点灯就是他的工作，也是他的全部生活了。
在一个既没有人住也没有一间房子的星球上，路灯和点灯人有什么用处？点灯究竟是为了给谁照亮呢？
看到点灯人的工作，还没上前打招呼，就先自己观察、思考了起来。他虽然想了半天也无法理解，但认为这工作还是有些意义的。当他点亮路灯时，整个星球都会亮起来，就好像使一颗星星或一朵花醒过来一样美妙；而当他熄灭路灯时，就像是把花或星星送入梦乡。因为他所做的事情有意义，所以这份职业是美好的；因为它是美好的，所以它也一定是有用的。
小王子恭恭敬地向点灯人打招呼。点灯人一边工作一边和小王子聊了起来，他们谈了三十天的话。
原来这颗星球每分钟就转一圈，所以点灯人每分钟都要点一次灯、熄一次灯，几乎是刚点亮灯就要熄灭，忙得团团转，连一秒钟的休息时间都没有。所以他最大的梦想就是能够想休息就休息。这里每天只如一分钟长，三十分钟，三十天，岁月如梭。

或许点灯人的业余时间不仅仅是用来休息睡觉才好，而是学习充电、思考创新吧。他如果边做点灯的工作边做路灯的创新研究，待技术革新了，路灯革新成智能感应自动开关的现代化路灯，点灯人也可顺理成章地转技术岗了，不会失业。
小王子有点儿喜欢这个敬业的点灯人了，他想帮助这位朋友，所以为他想了个好办法。虽然小王子的办法可以让点灯人不用总是忙于工作而可以想休息就休息，但是点灯人又觉得这帮不上他多大忙，因为他想要的是“睡觉”。一个人可以是敬业的，同时又是懒惰的，还有些不切实际的幻想，拒绝脚踏实地地改善。
也许这个点灯人很可笑，但他比那个国王、爱慕虚荣的人、酒鬼和商人，要好很多了，他是这些人中最不荒唐的人。点灯人跟他们不一样的地方在于，他所关心的不仅仅是他自己，而是别的事。因为点灯人的工作不仅仅是为自己，而是有益于人的，所以它是有意义的，是美好的，也是有用的。这让小王子愿意和他成为朋友。
但是，点灯人的世界实在太小了，小到住不下两个人。所以小王子没有停留在这颗令人赞美的星球，虽然这里有令他留恋的一天可以看一千四百四十次的日落。小王子继续向前走，去拜访了他的下一位邻居。

作者简介
安东尼·德·圣·埃克苏佩里（Antoine de Saint-Exupéry）法国飞行员，于1900年6月29日出生在法国里昂一个传统的天主教贵族家庭。
1921~1923年在法国空军服役。他曾经有志于报考海军学院，未能如愿，却有幸成了空军的一员，他还是法国最早的一代飞行员之一。1923年退役后，先后从事过各种不同的职业。1923年退役后，先后从事过各种不同的职业。1926年，圣埃克絮佩里进入拉泰科埃尔航空公司。
