我国早在西周时代就设有专门核算官方财赋收支的官职——司会，并对财物收支采取了“月计岁会”(零星算之为计，总合算之为会)的方法;后来会计人员一般称为账房先生。
会计是以货币为主要计量单位，以凭证为主要依据，借助于专门的技术方法，对一定单位的资金运动进行全面、综合、连续、系统的核算与监督，向有关方面提供会计信息、参与经营管理、旨在提高经济效益的一种经济管理活动。
会计古义是集会议事。我国从周代就有了专设的会计官职，掌管赋税收入、钱银支出等财务工作，进行月计、岁会。亦即，每月零星盘算为“计”，一年总盘算为“会”，两者合在一起即成“会计”。
中国古代的会计制度在民间是很不普及的，民间的企业和富户个人只有身兼会计出纳的账房，而没有专门的会计。
但国家机关里却是一直都有专门的会计部门和人员的，要不然也不会有“会计”(这个词不是外来语，中国古已有之)这个词出现了。
最早的会计人员叫司会，后来的朝代多称为“度支”，这个官职不但具有现代会计的功能，而且还很开展预测、决策、控制和分析，很是超时代，呵呵。
